Production: How Plant-Cell-Produced Vaccines are Made

Dow AgroSciences uses a revolutionary production system to make
its new plant-cell-produced subunit vaccines.

Most vaccines are produced in animal cell culture using blood serum or in fertilized eggs. This approach carries the risk of cross-contamination with other animal diseases.

Recently, much effort has been placed on developing plant-made vaccines using field crops. The regulatory path for this technology remains unclear due to environmental concerns.

The Dow AgroSciences unique Concertâ„¢ Plant-Cell-Produced System uses plant cells, rather than whole plants, in a culture medium comprised primarily of water, sugar and salt. This eliminates the possibility of contamination and environment concerns. The Concertâ„¢ Plant-Cell-Produced System is totally bio-contained as all production is done in a sealed and sterile production process. This means only the required inputs get into the vaccine and only a safe, non-replicating vaccine comes out.
