Important Locust Update(PDF 270KB) - The GRDC has warned that locusts will be a major issue throughout the southern cropping region this season. The Australian Plague Locust Commission states that three generations of locusts have already hatched in the southern region as a result of widespread rain and favourable habitat conditions. Despite intensive attempts to control the current generation, eggs that were laid in autumn are expected to produce a widespread nymph (hopper) infestation in NSW, northern Victoria and eastern South Australia.
Dow AgroSciences offers products for pre-post emergence grass control, broadleaf control and insect management in:
Pulses - Lupins, chickpeas, faba beans, field peas, mung beans, soybeans, lentils
Sugar cane
Rice
Oilseed and pulse crops are often grown in rotation with cereals as grass-free disease "breaks." This also provides the opportunity to input organic nitrogen in the cases of pulses. Effective pest and weed control is essential to the successful establishment of these crops, which are less competitive early in the crop growth cycle than grass and broadleaf weeds.
