Pastures
Important Locust Update (PDF 270KB) - The GRDC has warned that locusts will be a major issue throughout the southern cropping region this season. The Australian Plague Locust Commission states that three generations of locusts have already hatched in the southern region as a result of widespread rain and favourable habitat conditions. Despite intensive attempts to control the current generation, eggs that were laid in autumn produced a widespread nymph (hopper) infestation in NSW, northern Victoria and eastern South Australia.
Productive pastures play an important role in the traditional mixed farming areas of temperate Australia. Whether in a continuous cropping programme or intensive cropping in conjunction with livestock enterprise — pastures, especially well managed legume or lucerne pastures, contribute significantly to the success of rotational cropping systems.
Improving Profitability
Many pastures throughout southeastern and western Australia are operating well below their potential, in many cases more than 50% below. This has a direct affect on future cereal crop yields and livestock weight gains. Pasture production and pasture quality can be dramatically lifted with careful attention to fertiliser inputs and improved management. And when combined with selective weed control techniques, this results in both cereal and livestock producers having excellent pastures and improved profitability.
BroadstrikeTM — the most selective, yet effective option for broadleaf weed control in newly established/established lucerne, clover, medic and serradella pastures and high density legumes in New South Wales.
