Vegetable Crop Protection

The gross value of Australian vegetable production has climbed steadily over the past 10 years and today is estimated to be well in excess of $3 billion, this production coming from less than 5000 vegetable growing units.

While production figures are impacted by seasonal conditions, the value of production has risen in most vegetable categories over the last four years. Despite a number of challenges facing the industry, beyond the farm gate the industry continues to benefit from longterm trends in vegetable consumption. Fifty years ago, the average Australian consumed around 130 kilograms of vegetables annually. Today per capita consumption has risen to approximately 160 kilograms, representing a 25 percent increase. If vegetable consumption continues to grow at the same rate, then per capita consumption could approach around 190 kilograms by 2050.

The judicious use of selective pesticides to control insect pests, weeds and diseases plays an important role in increasing vegetable production, improving the quality of Australia’s vegetable crops and enabling growers to earn reasonable returns on their investments.

Insecticides	Description
Lorsban* 500 EC Insecticide	For control of earth mites, lucerne flea, wireworms, African black beetle, cutworms, crickets, armyworms, aphids lightbrown apple moth (LBAM), heliothis, weevils and wingless grasshopper in various vegetable crops by soil or foliar application. Other: Controls armyworms, leafrollers, scales, locusts and mealybugs in citrus, grapes, kiwifruit, mangoes and avocados.
Naturalure Fruit Fly Bait Concentrate	For control of fruit flies (including Queensland fruit fly and Medfly), infesting various vegetable crops, fruit trees, nut and vine crops and ornamentals and on fruit fly resting sites, including non-crop vegetation.p>
Prodigy* Insecticide	For control of native budworm, tomato grub (Helicoverpa spp.) and cluster caterpillar (Spodoptera litura) in fruiting vegetables (tomatoes, chillis, capsicums and egg plants). Other: Controls lightbrown apple moth and other caterpillars in various horticultural crops such as grapes, pome and stone fruit, macadamias and avocados.
Success* NEO Insecticide	For control of native budworm, tomato grub (Helicoverpa spp.), diamondback moth, cabbage white butterfly, centre grub, cabbage cluster caterpillar, tomato leafminer (potato tuber moth), loopers and western flower thrips in a wide range of vegetables (brassicas, fruiting vegetables, cucurbits, herbs, leafy vegetables, root and tuber vegetables etc). Other: Controls western flower thrips and caterpillar pests in tropical tree crops, berries, canola and forage brassicas, forestry and more.
Herbicides	Description
GoalTender* Herbicide	Selective control of broadleaf weeds and some grasses in broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. Other: Knockdown and/or residual control of broadleaf weeds and some grasses in fruit and nut trees, vineyards and tropical tree crops.
Kerb* Herbicide	Selective control of grasses and some broadleaf weeds in direct sown and transplanted lettuce. Other: Controls weeds in lucerne, clover, medics, and turf.
Ripper* 480 Herbicide	Non-selective post-emergence herbicide used for control of many annual and perennial weeds in a wide range of vegetable crops and other situations.

Dithane* Rainshield Neo Tec Fungicide	For control of anthracnose, ascochyta, cercospora, chocolate spot, downy mildew, rust, target spot and many more fungal diseases across the complete range of vegetable crops. Other: Controls fungal diseases in pome and stonefruit, citrus, grapes, tropical crops and more.
