AUSVEG recognises Dow AgroSciences for its support of young growers

Australia - May 01, 2012

Dow AgroSciences’ Horticulture Business Manager, John Gilmour, recently received the prestigious AUSVEG Industry Leader Award in recognition of his commitment to young growers.

With a commitment to supporting the future generation of vegetable growers and an ongoing interest in providing mentoring and training opportunities, Dow AgroSciences’ Horticulture Business Manager, John Gilmour, has been recognised as an industry leader by AUSVEG.

John received the prestigious Industry Leader Award at the recent AUSVEG National Awards in Hobart. This award is only presented when there is an outstanding candidate, according to AUSVEG Chairman, John Brent.

"John Gilmour is an outstanding leader within the Australian vegetable and potato industries, and thoroughly deserves this award," said Mr Brent.

"He has worked with us on a number of industry issues, including minor use crop protectants, which is an issue of great importance to our members. He was also instrumental in organising briefings of Australian vegetable growers by senior US-based Dow AgroSciences’ management, an invaluable opportunity for the Australian vegetable community to learn what Dow AgroSciences has to offer their industry."

In receiving the award, John said it was critical to support young growers and therefore to ensure a viable future for Australia’s horticultural sector.

"To progress the industry, you have to listen to and work with young growers," said John. "We worked with AUSVEG earlier this year to host a tour of young growers at our facilities in Indianapolis in the United States, where they met with senior staff to learn more about what we’re doing to provide them with product solutions for the future.

"One of the things that most impressed me was their confidence and ability to talk to very senior staff on an equal footing. They were a bright young lot and their commitment to the industry was outstanding.

"As an international company committed to research and development, we also recognise the importance of giving young growers the tools they need to enable them to do the job of growing vegetables in an environment that is more challenging than that experienced by the generation before them.

"Younger growers are also driving change in the industry, demanding softer, more targeted products. "We’ve responded to this groundswell for change with the launch of products like Success™ NEO, which is extremely effective against key chewing caterpillar insects and western flower thrip, while being soft enough to protect populations of beneficial insects.

"Registration is also pending for Transform™, an insecticide for the control of aphids and greenhouse whitefly across a wide range of vegetable crops. Transform works in a unique way on the same site as neo-nicotinoid insecticides through a brand new mode of action, so there is no cross resistance between them. Like Success NEO, it’s also safe to many beneficial insects."

AUSVEG Communications and Public Affairs Manager, William Churchill, added that John’s willingness to share information on its new pipeline products is further testament to his commitment to the future of the industry.

"John clearly recognises that for the industry to be viable, you need to work with industry bodies such as AUSVEG, which in the end benefits our members."
