Success* - First Naturalyte Product Registered in Canada
Award-winning green chemistry now available to Canadian apple growers

Calgary, AB - May 01, 2001

Success 480 SC, the first product in the entirely new naturalyte class of insect control, has received Canadian registration for use in apples. Developed by Dow AgroSciences, Success is the only naturalyte product available on the global market.

Naturalytes have an excellent environmental and human safety profile that is similar to biological products (e.g., Bt) and are as effective as or better than conventional insecticides. Dow AgroSciences received the U.S. President's Green Chemistry Award for developing this new class of chemistry.

"Dow AgroSciences works hard to provide growers with solutions. Success is the only naturalyte product in the world, and has received an award for its combination of efficacy and human and environmental safety," says Brenda Harris in charge of regulatory and government affairs at Dow AgroSciences Canada Inc. "Success is an example of our continued commitment to bring new solutions to the market."

Success is currently registered for control of oblique banded leafrollers on apples. It has the potential to be used in a wide variety of Canadian crops through future use extensions. In the United States, Success is registered for use in over 170 different crops.

The active ingredient in Success, spinosad, is produced by fermentation of naturally occurring bacteria. It is active on several important insects of apples and other crops. Success acts quickly through ingestion and contact, and is an excellent fit in an integrated pest management (IPM) program.

The unique mode of action and lack of cross-resistance with any other known insecticide makes Success the ideal foundation for IPM and resistance management strategies. Success is also safe on beneficial insects such as ladybird beetles, lacewings, true bugs, spiders and predatory mites. Survival of these beneficial insects can help control subsequent pest build-up, reducing the need for follow-up sprays.

Success has a favorable profile in terms of safety to humans, mammals, birds and aquatic organisms. It is active at low rates and dissipates rapidly in the environment.
