Sam Coulton Talks Conserve™ Plus
Fourth generation farmer, Sam Coulton, of Morella Agriculture at Boggabilla, manages an irrigated cotton operation as part of his family’s business which spans southern Queensland and northern NSW. Together they grow irrigated cotton, cereals and Angus breeders. Pest management, in all its forms, is a critical issue for Sam:
”We used Conserve Plus last year on our wheat and feed barley.
We used to spray Reldan Plus IGR on everything that went into the silo anyway and coat the silo with Reldan and we’d then fumigate the silo post treatment. Our silos are adjacent to a GrainCorp receival site so we have terrible trouble with weevils. I was never able to leave any of the grain for more than three to four months as it was just impossible to get the grain out with all of the weevil dust on the slide, the grain just wouldn’t slide down. Every load was covered in weevils, leading to repeat fumigations. We were always worried about the grain being rejected and having to take it back.
We’ve used Conserve for the past three years and I haven’t seen a weevil since! We were able to hold our grain from last year until June this year, about eight months, and I’m sure I could have held onto it for longer. I still didn’t see a weevil in there. It’s a seriously good product.
I’m just concerned about ensuring we don’t get any resistance with it, as it’s the best chemical product I’ve seen in a long time. We ensure we rotate the chemistry around our different farms and storage facilities and we rotate with k-Obiol as well.
We used to have terrible dramas with weevils and now with Conserve Plus we don’t even think about them.”
