Make the easy choice the healthy choice

As a mother of two young girls, a full-time employee and a part-time student, I literally have no time. Each week we are running from work to dance, swimming, pilates or hockey. There are definitely those hectic days that I just need to find something quick and easy to feed my family. I’ll admit that my children know what the “golden arches“ are… When I need to choose a fast food restaurant, I actively seek out establishments that are trying to provide their customers with healthier options, like products made with healthy omega-9 oils. Omega-9 oils do not contain trans-fat. Trans-fat is known to raise bad cholesterol and lower good cholesterol. Omega-9 canola oil is uniquely high in monounsaturated fats, which help reduce key factors that contribute to heart disease and diabetes.Ehlertbiopic

When I do have time I love to provide my family with healthy and nutritious food, and I try to cook from scratch whenever possible. I just recently discovered a great homemade granola bar recipe that was free of sugar. Even better: I was able to substitute in omega-9 canola oil for the fat ingredient. My family devoured the bars, and my daughter’s school friends begged her to bring them some more. I felt pretty good knowing that I was feeding them something that tasted good and was good for them.

It is really exciting to see people wanting to learn more about the different types of fats and their roles in our health. People are starting to focus on ensuring the right types of fats are part of their diets. As a molecular biologist working for Dow AgroSciences, I am excited to be part of the canola team that has helped provide consumers with a healthy canola oil option. Through science, our team has developed Nexera Canola Hybrids that have one of the healthiest omega-9 canola oil profiles on the market. I get to see first-hand the dedication and commitment of the canola team to developing varieties that farmers are willing and eager to grow. I also get to be part of a team of researchers responsible for enabling the use of various technologies to support the development of crops like canola.

Utilization of omega-9 oils has already resulted in the removal of over 1.5 billion pounds of trans and saturated fats from the North American diet. It’s pretty cool to be part of something of this magnitude.

As a busy mom, it is great to see that more and more companies are partnering with scientists and nutritionists to develop healthier products for consumers. I can easily make healthy decisions at home when I have the time to make our meals from scratch. But there will always be those days that convenience wins out, and now when I go to the grocery store or choose a fast food establishment, I have choices that I can feel good about.
