Seeds, Traits & Oils
Using breeding and agricultural biotechnology, Dow AgroSciences continues to demonstrate leadership in the discovery and development of traits for insect resistance, herbicide tolerance, oil quality, enhanced meal quality, drought tolerance, and nitrogen utilization. The company's biological solutions pipeline demonstrates diverse and innovative product candidates with market potential around the world. Some examples of recent successes include:
- In 2010, our PhytoGen® cottonseed varieties have reached 10 percent of the total U.S. cotton market.
- SmartStax® corn hybrids deliver multiple modes of action for the broadest spectrum of insect control ever available. It allows growers to reduce the refuge requirement, or the area that must be planted with non-insect resistant seed, from 20 percent to five percent in the corn belt and from 50 percent to 20 percent in the cotton growing states, in order to maximize whole farm yield potential.
- Since 2005, more than 100 restaurants and restaurant chains in North America, like Taco Bell, have converted to Omega–9 Oils. As a result, nearly one billion pounds of "bad" fats have been removed from the North American diet.
- EXZACT™ Precision Technology gives Dow AgroSciences the ability to do precise gene targeting in plants – a long standing but elusive goal of the plant biotechnology industry – which helps us develop complex traits faster, better, and cheaper.
- The Enlist™ Weed Control System will provide superior new weed control technology that sustains the simple glyphosate-cropping system growers prefer by controlling glyphosate-resistant and other hard-to-control broadleaf weeds through additional herbicide modes of action.
Crop Protection
Our agricultural chemical pipeline will remain a cornerstone of our business as we advance new innovation into the marketplace. Some examples of recent successes include:
- Between 2008 and 2012, we are ramping up or planning to launch five new products. We anticipate our new products being more than $800 million of our sales by 2013.
- New herbicides aminopyralid, pyroxsulam, and penoxsulam add value as single-entity products and mixing partners.
- New insecticide spinetoram brings value for high-value market segments, and, pending regulatory approvals, the launch of sulfoxaflor in 2012 will further strengthen our insecticide portfolio.
- New formulations extend product life by meeting customers' needs for greener1, easier-to-use formulations. For instance, SPLAT-MAT™ Spinosad ME is a novel delivery system that uses our award-winning product spinosad to control fruit flies, which are among the most economically disastrous pest species worldwide.
Pest & Vegetation Management
Dow AgroSciences has researchers focused on how to address insect, weed and disease problems in urban environments, including homes, golf courses and nurseries. Some examples of recent successes include:
- Many famous structures including the Statue of Liberty, the White House, Champs Elysées, and England's Parliament Building are treated and saved from damage by Dow AgroSciences' Sentricon® Termite Colony Elimination System.
- Garlon® 4 Ultra herbicide is an innovative new formulation that has no petroleum distillates; instead it uses methylated seed oil as its solvent, which reduces the environmental impact while continuing to offer powerful control of unwanted brush and broadleaf weeds.
