Grain Corn
Grain Corn Hybrid Development Process
You can rely on our grain corn development process for premier hybrids with leading trait technology. Using this comprehensive process, Mycogen® brand corn hybrids deliver top yields.
Discovery
The development process starts with the selection of germplasm for our concept hybrids. We draw from our broad genetic portfolio as well as other elite germplasm.
Testing
We continuously evaluate corn hybrids in plot tests to determine their potential. They’re tested for a minimum of four to five years for agronomic characteristics and yield. Plot tests are done at all of our Corn Belt facilities as well as our continuous nursery stations in Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
Data Review
Extensive yield data and hybrid characteristic evaluations from multiple locations and years are entered into our Variety Development Process (VDP) database. It contains quantitative criteria required for concept hybrid advancement. If the corn hybrid meets established goals, it will pass through a “decision gate” and move forward in the development process.
Trait Introduction
Corn hybrids that have proven to perform will be chosen at this stage to have insect protection and herbicide tolerance traits incorporated through introgression.
Final Selection
Before any marketing considerations are made on a corn hybrid, complete data reports are reviewed. At this time, promising hybrids are also evaluated at our Genetic Purity Lab, Special Traits Lab and Germination Lab. If the corn hybrid meets all established goals, then and only then, will it advance to the commercial launch stage.
Launch
At this final commercial launch stage, the corn hybrid has satisfied all quantitative criteria for advancement. It has moved through key stages over many years and many acres to reach this point, and now moves into commercial production and distribution as a Mycogen Seeds hybrid.
