Benefits to the Environment
The benefits of plant biotechnology serve the environment in many ways, including:
- More efficient use of land through enhanced growth and yield traits
- More efficient use of water resources through drought and heat resistance
- Reduced use of chemicals through use of plant-incorporated protectants as part of Integrated Pest Management programs
- Decreased tillage which reduces erosion of land
- Reduced use of petroleum resources and other inputs involved in cultivation, application and fertilizer (nutrient utilization)
- Increased use of renewable and sustainable fuel resources, such as ethanol and biodiesel
