Seeds & Traits

Corn-Pollination

The introduction of new genetic traits, such as insect or disease resistance, via biotechnology does not reduce the importance of superior germplasm in the host plant. Nor does it replace the need for plant science and plant breeding.

But it can present new and unique challenges.

Our Seeds & Traits Platform is responsible for combining novel genetic traits with elite germplasm to develop crops that thrive while expressing the desired trait. A typical development process follows these steps:

  1. Discovering novel genes.
  2. Transforming them into the cells of plants.
  3. Optimizing the expression of the genetic trait in plants in the correct plant tissues, at the appropriate time and in sufficient levels.
  4. Incorporating, through breeding, the genetic trait into commercially viable varieties or hybrids.

Additionally, we are among the world leaders in the stewardship and security of seed and trait research from the cellular level through commercialization.
