The Pipeline

We continue to break new ground in plant biotechnology, and we have a variety of projects in the R&D product pipeline. For an overview of the new and upcoming products in the crops pipeline, see figure 1 below.

Crop Protection & Healthy Oils

In 2006, we launched four new products, including two new insect-protection traits for corn (Herculex® RW Rootworm Protection  and Herculex XTRA Insect Protection). Herculex RW gives growers a high level of powerful season-long protection against corn rootworm. Herculex XTRA provides the broadest spectrum, above- and below-ground in-plant insect protection available. Cotton growers will have an expanded offering of PhytoGen™  varieties with WideStrike® Insect Protection combined with the Roundup Ready® herbicide tolerant trait.

Our Herculex traits are also available with the Roundup Ready Corn 2 herbicide tolerant trait. New PhytoGen cotton varieties with WideStrike are anticipated for availability with tolerance to Roundup Ready Flex (providing an even longer application window for glyphosate products).

Current research goals also include development of proprietary herbicide tolerance traits for various crops. Our research efforts also will focus on producing expanded and enhanced Omega 9 product offerings.

Animal Health
We also are breaking new ground in animal health vaccines. We have received regulatory approval for the world’s first plant-cell-produced vaccine. This scientific breakthrough eliminates the risk of animal virus contaminants associated with current production systems. The result:  healthier animals, less work for producers and less risk for consumers.
