Our research efforts have produced a wide range of innovative biotechnology and seed products to help farmers produce higher yields and higher quality food and fiber products.

Insect Traits. In 2003, we successfully launched Herculex^® I Insect Protection – The corn industry's broadest-spectrum above-ground in-plant insect protection trait available today. This was accomplished through collaboration between Dow AgroSciences and Pioneer Hi-Bred International. The newest offerings in the Herculex family of products include Herculex RW Rootworm Protection and Herculex XTRA Insect Protection, both of which were approved from registration and cultivation in late 2005. Herculex RW provides growers a high level of powerful season-long protection against corn rootworm. Herculex XTRA provides the broadest-spectrum above and below-ground in-plant insect protection available.

Our proprietary trait portfolio extended into cotton with the launch of WideStrike® Insect Protection during 2005. WideStrike provides broad-spectrum, in-plant insect control to cotton growers – a much-needed choice in in-plant protection.

Healthy Oils. Our Healthy Oils platform based on canola and sunflowers serves another evolving marketplace with successful innovations from our plant breeding programs. We are the exclusive provider of Nexera® brand canola. These varieties offer our customers a significant opportunity for profitable production and higher premiums. That’s because Nexera canola is the exclusive source of Omega-9 Oils, which is trans-fat free and low in saturated fat. We also serve this exciting market with a comprehensive selection of sunflowers. We offer one of the widest selections of NuSun™ and high-oleic sunflowers. These hybrids have low levels of saturated fats when processed and give growers higher premium potential in the healthy oils market.

Seeds. Our elite plant breeding program has generated a vast collection of proprietary genetics to develop top-performing crop varieties with the characteristics our customers need.

As one example, we have developed and offered proprietary nutritionally enhanced crops for livestock through our retail seed company, Mycogen Seeds.  Our Silage-Specific™ hybrids have been specifically bred for nutritional quality so that dairy producers can maximize production with nutritionally enhanced corn hybrids and alfalfa varieties. Mycogen high-performing grain corn hybrids possess strong genetics and are enhanced with the Herculex family of insect-protection traits.  Herculex I Insect Protection is also licensed to many other seed companies in North America.

For our cotton business, PhytoGen® cottonseed is the market leader in high-value western Pima and Acala cotton varieties and offers top-performing varieties in other cotton-growing areas as well. PhytoGen cotton varieties are enhanced with WideStrike® Insect Protection and herbicide-tolerant traits.
