Early maturity variety spreads risk for growers

Transylvania, La.  The vigor, maturity and yields of PHY 370 WR from PhytoGen Cottonseed have growers taking notice across the Cotton Belt.

When PHY 370 WR pushed through the sandier soils on Boyce Miller's farm in Transylvania, La., during a cool period in early April, it caught his attention. "The vigor of 370 was noticably better than triple nickel," Miller says.

In addition to the vigor, Miller likes the yields and grades he saw from the PhytoGen™ brand PHY 370 WR variety, which averaged 1,562 pounds on 250 acres. "When the bolls on the PhytoGen varieties open, they look like big tennis balls," Miller says. "The plants are loaded throughout the field and it looks like there's lint everywhere."

"In 2007, I'll be planting at least half of my 1,300 acres of cotton to 370 because I know it'll consistently produce good yields," Miller concludes.

Meanwhile, across the Mississippi River in Donalsonville, Ga., Brad Thompson is taking note of the 1,539 pounds per acre yield PHY 370 WR produced in 2006.

"Because 370 matures earlier, we're able to go ahead and get it out before the hurricanes and storms," Thompson says. "We're spreading our risk."

"370 (PHY 370 WR) averaged 1,562 pounds on 250 acres in 2006. It had a 1-pound yield advantage over 555 (DP 555 BG/RR) and because of the staple length netted an extra $6 per bale profit. Based on this performance, 370 will be planted on half of our 1,300 acres because it consistently produces a good yield and grades well."
