PhytoGen® brand PHY 375 WRF was the most popular cotton variety planted in 2011, according to a recent report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. PHY 375 WRF was planted on 10.67 percent of all Upland variety cotton acres, outdistancing the closest competitor by more than 3 percent.
The planting of PHY 375 WRF increased nearly three share points from last year, when it was the second-most planted variety at 7.72 percent. PHY 375 WRF grew across all geographies, seeing a 6.45 share-point increase in the Southeast, a 3.86 share-point increase in the Midsouth, a 0.97 share-point increase in the Southwest and a 3.7 share-point increase in the West.

PHY 375 WRF was the most planted variety in six states: Mississippi, North Carolina, New Mexico, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
“We selected PHY 375 WRF because of its broad geographical fit,” Canfield says. “Being the most planted variety in states ranging from the Mid-Atlantic to the Southwest is a testament to that characteristic.”
PHY 375 WRF is an indeterminate, early maturing variety with the capacity to keep growing in stressful environments. The excellent vigor and growth habits of PHY 375 WRF lead to a high degree of yield stability and fiber quality, which is especially good for an early maturing cotton variety.
Overall, PhytoGen brand varieties accounted for 16.7 percent of all Upland variety cotton acres, an uptick of 4.6 share points from 2010. PhytoGen brand PHY 367 WRF and PHY 565 WRF accounted for 2.23 and 2.09 percent of all Upland acres, respectively.
PhytoGen also produced the highest-selling Pima varieties in 2011, accounting for 77.84 percent of all Pima varieties planted. PhytoGen brand PHY 805 RF was planted on 60.39 percent of all Pima variety acres, followed by PhytoGen brand PHY 800 on 10.14 percent.
