Intrepid® 2F Insecticide Now Protects Valuable Pastures
Indianapolis, IN — June 19, 2008 Armyworms can chew up a pasture seemingly overnight. Given the high value of intensively managed forage, it makes sense to protect it. Because of a supplemental product label now available for Intrepid® 2F insecticide, cattlemen have a new option — offering several advantages — to stop armyworm feeding and keep their cattle grazing. The new label for Intrepid 2F includes the control of armyworms in grass forage, fodder and hay. And Intrepid 2F controls those damaging pests for 14 days. Equally important: the convenience factor. This new label gives cattlemen an additional, cost-effective option for armyworm control without grazing restrictions. Cattle can re-enter and graze on the treated area immediately after application. “Southern regions of the United States and even areas as far north as Kansas and Missouri can experience significant armyworm pressure,” says Tom Linnen, marketing specialist for Intrepid 2F at Dow AgroSciences. “Not only does Intrepid 2F allow growers to treat armyworms without disrupting beneficial insects, but for cattlemen, it provides little disruption of their livestock.” Intrepid 2F has been used for many years as an insect growth regulator effective against many species of lepidopteran insects, including those that commonly feed on pastureland, such as fall armyworms, southern armyworms and true armyworms. It does not disrupt beneficial insects, mites and pollinators, making Intrepid® 2F insecticide ideal for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs. Producers can apply Intrepid 2F at the first signs of feeding damage, or when the threshold levels of feeding damage occur. “Armyworms are ferocious eaters, and they can come at you over a period of time,” says Larry Walton, product technology specialist with Dow AgroSciences. “So, having 14-plus-day residual control, as Intrepid 2F does, can save you repeat treatments, compared with other insecticides.” Intrepid® 2F insecticide features a novel mode of action that mimics the action of the molting hormone of armyworms. Upon ingestion of the insecticide, armyworms undergo an incomplete and lethal premature molt. This process stops their feeding. While feeding typically ceases within hours, complete mortality may take several days. “We call them walking-dead worms,” Walton says. “You may still see them crawling, but they’re not doing any damage.” For pasture use, apply 4 to 8 fluid ounces of Intrepid® 2F insecticide per acre. Use the higher rate specified on the label for heavy infestations or targeted pests in the advanced stages of growth. INTREPID 2F should be applied in at least 10 gallons of water per acre by using conventional ground application or 5 gallons per acre using aerial equipment. Producers should not apply more than 32 fluid ounces per acre per year and should not harvest hay within seven days of application.
