Knapweed - Russian
Family: Asteraceae Structure: Up to 3 feet tall, erect, often found in dense clumps. The stems are generally less branched than diffuse or spotted knapweeds. Life Cycle: Perennial herb. Leaves: Alternate or simple, of several types. Upper leaves small and narrow with an unbroken edge. Stem leaves intermediate with slightly toothed margins. Basal leaves deeply notched. Flowers: Lavender, thistle-like, single, terminal with a scaly seed head. Produced June-September. Roots: Dark brown to black, heavily scaled. In two growing seasons, the roots may go down 10 feet and form a circle 10-12 feet in diameter.
