Scientific Name: Euphorbia esula L.

Family: Euphorbiaceae

Structure: Up to 3 feet tall. The mature plant is a cluster of erect stems.

Life Cycle: Perennial that's spread by seed or creeping roots. Grows from a woody crown below the soil surface. Stems from roots may reach a height of 16-32 inches by early summer.

Leaves: Alternate, long, narrow, 1/4 inch wide and 2 inches long, usually drooping. Linear-shaped, these leaves contain a white, milky latex. Develops yellow bracts in later May or early June, giving the plant the appearance of blooming. Turns yellow-green near maturity.

Flowers: Inconspicuous, small green flowers are surrounded by large heart-shaped floral bracts. Appear about mid-June.

Roots: Brown, deep, spreading, persistent.

Treatment:

Choose one of the following:

• Apply 2 quarts of Tordon® K specialty herbicide per acre anytime after growth begins in the spring before full bloom and in late summer or fall.
• Apply 2 quarts to 2 gallons of Tordon 101M specialty herbicide per acre as a water spray mixture to actively growing plants.
• For suppression, apply 12 fluid ounces of Accord® XRT II herbicide per acre plus 0.5 pound a.i. 2,4-D in 3 to 10 gallons of water in the late summer or fall.
• For suppression, apply 2.67 pints of Vista® specialty herbicide per acre.
