Thistle – Plumeless

    
 
Scientific Name: Carduus acanthoides

Family: Asteraceae

Structure: Stems grow from 1–4 feet tall, freely branched and covered with 1/4–1/3 inch wide, spiny wings.

Life Cycle: Winter annual or biennial herb, rarely flowers first year.

Leaves: Basal rosette leaves usually 4–8 inches long. Stem leaves alternate and blend into stem. Seedling rosette has wavy leaves with yellow spines along leaf margins.

Flowers: Purplish-pink, 1–2 inches in diameter. Solitary heads at the ends of branches or in clusters of two to five. Bracts sparsely to densely hairy. Flowering occurs from May–July.

Roots: Stout fleshy taproots.

Treatment:

Application Timing: Apply in the spring and early summer to rosette or bolting plants or in the fall to seedlings and rosettes before ground is frozen. Use higher rates after bolting through early flower.
