Varieties from PhytoGen Cottonseed Shine in University Official Variety Trials

2006 was a banner year for PhytoGen™ brand cottonseed varieties based on field trial performance. In university official variety trials (OVTs) across the southern U.S. Cotton Belt, several new cotton varieties from PhytoGen Cottonseed provided unsurpassed yield results.

The outstanding performance of PhytoGen™ brand cottonseed varieties reflects the research and development investment and quality of PhytoGen Cottonseed's breeding program. Among the PhytoGen brand cottonseed varieties tested in 2006 university OVTs were the 400 series, such as PHY 480 WR and PHY 485 WRF, which were developed using high yielding and broadly adapted PSC 355 as their key parent lineage. Also tested were early maturity varieties that were created using new proprietary germplasm - PHY 370 WR and PHY 310 R.

Yield results averaged across multiple state OVTs in 2005 and 2006 showed PhytoGen brand cottonseed varieties to be "top of the class" when compared to other industry variety standards that were in the same replicated trials.

Positive feedback from growers throughout the Cotton Belt validates the positive results reported from the university OVT trials. "370 (PHY 370 WR) averaged 1,562 pounds on 250 acres in 2006," said Boyce Miller of Transylvania, La. "It had a 1-pound yield advantage over 555 (DP 555 BG/RR) and because of the staple length netted an extra $6 per bale profit. Based of this performance, 370 will be planted on half of our 1,300 acres in 2007 because it consistently produces a good yield and grades well."
