Street-Lining Tree Protection
SENTRI*TECH references
Termites have long had the reputation of only eating dead wood... We now know that they can also attack live plants, in particular the trees that line streets in urban areas.

The Parisian Experiment
- Description of the situation: in Paris, we know that termites attack building, especially their ligneous substances (wooden frames, etc.). A new phenomenon has appeared near Parisian buildings that are attacked but protected: the underground termites of the Reticulitermes genus "fall back" on other prey, although living and located in the open air, in other words, street-lining trees.
These trees can be treated in the same way as a building. A close co-operation was therefore established between the city of Paris, the CNRS scientific research centers and Dow AgroSciences to perfect an appropriate method of fighting these termites.
- Methods used: in September 1996, a SENTRI*TECH station equipped with insecticide-free bait was installed. In October 1996, the wood was checked. It bore cords, a sure sign of termite presence: the station was then equipped with hexaflumuron. The results were conclusive and are now used in all the parks and gardens in Paris. The Parisian landscape is now protected with a method that is inoffensive for inhabitants and the environment...
