Termites in France: A state of emergency declared

detection methods

termites on a tree

The presence of termites is normally dectected only after the damage they cause is visible and irreversible. There are, however, certain ways to detect their presence...

How does one detect the presence of termites?

  • By the cords
Formed at the surface of materials that are too difficult to bore through, these cords are minute galleries – a mixture of soil, saliva and excrement – that termites construct to move around these obstacles. They can also build stalactites and stalagtites in the same way.

  • By testing the wood
With a pointed object, test the wood: the surface remains intact but the interior is filled with small galleries covered with the same cement used for making cords.

  • By acoustic detection methods
Very reliable, these methods require the intervention of a specialist.
