University Research Shows Superior Efficacy of TELONE® II from Dow AgroSciencesField Trials Reaffirm TELONE Improves Lint Yields and Reduces Nematode Populations INDIANAPOLIS - March 19, 2008 - In recent University of Florida research, TELONE® II soil fumigant outperformed all other nematicides and seed treatments for control of reniform nematodes in cotton. Results show TELONE II is much more effective than other commonly used products in reducing nematode populations in soils, thus improving lint yields. TELONE II is available from Dow AgroSciences for control of all major species of nematodes, including root knot, reniform, stubby root and cyst nematodes. Rich, along with D.L. Wright, Extension specialist and professor of agronomy, University of Florida, conducted the studies at the university's North Florida Research and Education Center in Quincy, Fla., throughout the 2007 growing season. The field experiments compared nematicides and seed treatments used to manage reniform nematode in cotton. Four treatments - Aeris, Avicta, Temik and TELONE II -- were tested alone and in combination, along with a Gaucho control treatment. Year-end results showed a significant improvement - up to 337 pounds per acre - in cotton lint yields following applications of TELONE® II soil fumigant. Population densities of reniform nematodes in pretreatment soil samples were at moderately damaging levels. At harvest, reniform nematode population densities were nearly 50 percent lower in the four treatments of TELONE II - significantly less than all other treatments in the test. There was no substantial difference in reniform nematode population densities among other single treatments. (See Table 1.) "Data from this test reaffirmed the high level of nematode control and subsequent yield increases provided by the application of TELONE II. In addition, the efficacy of TELONE II plus Gaucho was great enough that the addition of other nematicidal materials did not improve cotton yield or further reduce nematode populations," Rich says. Rich adds that growers should always include a thrips control product when using TELONE II. For more information about TELONE soil fumigant, visit www.TELONE.com.
