Best Management and Application Practices

Telone® II soil fumigant is the industry standard for long-term nematode management in potatoes. Listed below are the numerous benefits of Telone II:

Benefits of Telone® II soil fumigant

  • A true fumigant that moves throughout the soil
  • Efficacious on shallow and deep nematodes
  • Greater efficacy compared with contact nematicides
  • Manages most major species of nematodes
  • Helps manage nematode-transmitted diseases and viruses
  • Increases root efficiency for better use of water and fertilizers
  • Manages certain soil-borne insects like wireworms
  • Prepares the soil for the seed to optimize growth and tuber quality
  • Fuming activity allows movement throughout the soil profile

  • Rates
In the Pacific Northwest, Telone II should be applied as a broadcast treatment at a rate of 15 to 25 gal./A. Row treatment is not recommended for potatoes in irrigated areas of these states due to the potential presence of multiple generations of Columbia root-knot nematodes and the mobility of stubby-root nematodes.

Pre- and post-treatment sampling is recommended to determine the type and quantity of nematodes present. This information can help determine the need for additional nematicide management strategies.

    Application Timing

Temperature Soil temperature at the depth of application must be between 40 F and 80 F (optimum is 70 F to 80 F).
Soil moisture For fumigation depths deeper than 18 inches, the soil should be moist within a 16-inch radius upward from the point of injection. For all other applications, the soil must be moist from 2 inches below the soil surface to at least 12 inches deep. It is recommended that there be uniform soil moisture throughout the treatment zone. The amount of moisture needed in this zone will vary according to soil type.
Soil preparation Soil should be free of clods. Plant residues should be thoroughly incorporated into the soil prior to the treatment to avoid interfering with application. Fracture any compacted soil layers within the treatment zone before or during application.
Application In the Pacific Northwest, place Telone II at least 18 inches below the final soil surface as a broadcast treatment.
Fumigation interval Leave the soil undisturbed and unplanted for at least seven days after application and then allow an additional day of aeration time per gallon used. Under optimum soil conditions for dissipation, a period of one week for every 10 gallons per treated acre is generally required for complete dissipation. Do not enter the field if an odor of Telone II is detected.
Planting Allow Telone II to completely dissipate before planting.
