Spring cereal weed control - Time for a change?

Spring cereal drilling is well underway all over the UK. With good growing conditions, crops and weeds will grow rapidly. Important weeds in spring cereals include polygonums, fat hen, fumitory, hemp nettle, mayweeds, brassicas and chickweed, but there may be other locally common weeds dependent on rotation and soil type. Incidences of resistant broad-leaved weeds are increasing, especially for chickweed, mayweed and poppy.

Many fields receive a tank mix of chemistry for broad-leaved weeds. Until now the main herbicidal approach has been a broad-leaved weed SU + / - CMPP or HBN or Starane* 2, but Spitfire* will give a fresh approach to weed control in spring cereals.

Spitfire offers:

  • Excellent crop selectivity in spring barley, spring wheat and spring oats
  • Wide spectrum of control with added robustness on key weeds that damage yield and quality
  • Cost effective options to broaden spectrum
    • Spitfire 0.75 L/ha + CMPP 1.0-1.25 L/ha
      • Polygonums, hemp nettle, mayweeds, chickweed, cleavers, orache, black-bindweed
    • Spitfire 0.75 L/ha + HBN 0.75-1.0 L/ha
      • Polygonums, brassicas, hemp nettle, mayweeds, chickweed, cleavers, black- bindweed, pansy, speedwells, fumitory
    • Adjust ratios to suit weed spectrum / budget
  • Help combat the development of resistance with multiple actives
    • Adds in a non-ALS active for resistance management (e.g. chickweed)
    • Adds in non-SU active with “triazolopyrimidine” florasulam
  • Excellent compatibility including fungicides and PGRs
  • No added following crop or cultivation restrictions

Best use advice for controlling oats with Broadway Star

Broadway* Star offers excellent control of wild and tame oats including ‘fop/dim/den’ graminicide resistant populations.

The additional control of a range of broad-leaved weeds offers farmers excellent value for money and will negate the need for more complicated tank mixes with wild oat specific products and those for broad-leaved weed control. It will also help avoid the need for minimum sequencing intervals between certain wild oat and broad-leaved weed herbicides - taking away another headache.

Optimising the Wild & Tame Oat control with Broadway Star:

  • Use on all varieties of winter wheat, winter rye and triticale
  • Apply at 265g/ha in 130-150 litres of water
  • Needs to be applied with an adjuvant – range supported
  • FINE – MEDIUM spray quality
  • Supported through a range of nozzles including Flat Fan Nozzles, Billericay Bubble Jets, Hawk Nozzles, VP Jets and Airtec Nozzles
  • Apply when target weeds actively growing
  • Rainfast 1 hour
  • Crop at GS 11-32 inclusive
  • Weeds within correct growth stage
    • Wild Oats    GS 12-30
    • Tame Oats  GS 12-24

Tank Mixes on Winter Wheat (always use Broadway Star + adjuvant)

  • Can be tank mixed with a wide range of fungicides including chlorothalonil
  • Can be tank mixed a ½ dose of straight Chlormequat (two way tank mix only)
    • Any other growth regulators allow a 7 day interval
  • Can be tank mixed with trace elements
  • Can be tank mixed with herbicides
  • Tank-mixing Broadway Star 265g/ha + 0.5lt/ha Spitfire
    • Offers a clean-sweep of many broad-leaved weeds-many at larger sizes and an even wider spectrum of broad-leaved weeds including Black Nightshade, Docks (from seed), Fumitory and Parsley-piert.
  • Wide range of permitted ALS joint applications

This edition's FAQs

When will treating docks in grassland start?

dock - frosted

Dandelions

Soon. With the mild spring weeds are rapidly growing and docks are approaching the ideal stage for treatment. Docks are best treated when they have reached the rosette stage, are actively growing and look green and healthy. Reddy blue leaves indicate that plants have been frosted, and herbicide uptake will be poor. Docks respond well to nitrogen, so a good time to spray is two to four weeks after the first fertiliser application, as they should be actively growing by then.

When treating weeds early it is important to select a herbicide that will not damage the grass. Translocated herbicides, such as Doxstar*, control target weeds without checking the important first flush of spring grass. The first cut of silage is crucial for both yield and quality and it is important not to compromise this.

How do I control dandelions in grassland?

Grazon* 90, Doxstar and Thistlex* have excellent activity on perennial dandelions pre-flowering. Pastor at 2 L/ha also offer good activity on seedling dandelions (smaller than 5cm) in new leys.
