Growers in the West Midlands and the Welsh borders need to tackle wild oats and cleavers

UK - April 04, 2012

Growers in the west of England and the Welsh borders are seeing increased levels of wild oats and cleavers in winter wheat after the recent spate of warm weather, according to Dow AgroSciences regional business manager Brent Gibbon.

Mr Gibbon is recommending Broadway Star this spring, a formulation of pyroxsulam and florasulam, as the best product to effectively control wild oats, with the bonus of controlling broad-leaved weeds as well.

“Wild oats have been more prevalent and more advanced than usual due to the mild spring, while lighter land is getting very dry but weeds are still actively growing so it’s time to get going,” Mr Gibbon warns.

“We’re also seeing a lot of cleavers coming through. Spring barley will need treatment as well in a few weeks’ time – Spitfire and Starane XL, which both contain a unique mix of fluroxypyr and florasulam, are ideal and offer control of a broad range of weeds that threaten this crop,” he adds.

Not only can both products be used in all winter and spring cereal crops, they can be used right through to GS45.

Mr Gibbon says: “Both products are suited to the type of fluctuating spring temperatures we’ve seen this season. They offer excellent results on broad-leaved weeds in these kinds of conditions.”
