Young farmer wins iPad for bowling skills

UK - August 16, 2012

South Yorkshire farmer Tim Durdy managed to strike out blackgrass skittles in one go on Dow AgroSciences’ stand at the Cereals event and his skill has been rewarded with a top-of-the-range iPad.

Tim won the bowling alley game that promoted the launch of UNITE, a new herbicide that has been proven to be as effective against blackgrass in winter wheat as any other post emergence product. Unlike competitor products it also has the bonus of extensive broadleaved weed control.

The setup consists of Shawfield Farm, Haxey and Ninevah Farm, Epworth, near Doncaster, is a family affair, with Tim helping out his uncle Nigel Durdy and father Adrian Durdy at weekends. Tim is currently training to be an accountant through an apprenticeship scheme working at a practice in Doncaster.

He says: “They’ve not trusted me to open up the books yet but hopefully once I have qualified things may change with my valuable input.

“I’ve never been to Cereals before and I feel really lucky that I won the iPad – I’ve never won anything in my life before so I’m very pleased and very grateful to Dow AgroSciences.

“My uncle and father have already said they’re going to be utilising the iPad for crop walking.”

Tim’s uncle, Nigel does the agronomy on the 600 acre farm and crop walks a further 1,000 acres. The crops grown are mainly wheat and rape and he intends to use UNITE this season against blackgrass.
