“Get Set” to control major rapeseed weedsUK - February 13, 2007 Get ready to spray with Galera (clopyralid and picloram) to control mayweeds, sow thistle and suppress cleavers. Galera needs mild conditions for best results, and although the recent cold snap has slowed growth, oilseed rape crops will need Galera applications soon, if treatments have not been made already. “First priority should be areas with high populations of sow-thistles, mayweeds and cleavers,” advises Dow AgroSciences Technical Specialist Rene Pollak. “Where the crop is thick, make sure you maximise canopy penetration by using a medium spray quality, higher water rates and lower ground speeds. This is especially important to achieve good contact with mayweeds and cleavers.” Mr Pollak advises to keep a weather eye open. “Galera needs settled weather for best results. Cold spells shut down the weed’s metabolism and control may be reduced by cold weather up to 10 days after application. Remember also that cold weather can stress crops. So exactly when the application is made needs careful planning.” Finally Mr Pollak warns growers: “Don’t make applications to water-logged soils. We must avoid the risk of pesticide run-off into water-courses, besides water-logged crops are under stress and won’t respond well.” Applications of Galera can be made until the crop green buds start to show above the crop, but cannot be applied after GS 3.5. Once the crop reaches GS 3.5 - flower buds raised above the leaf canopy – it is too late. |
