Cooler weather is best for grass weed control in rape

UK - November 21, 2007

Cooling soils means that growers should be applying Kerb-Flo (propyzamide) now for best grass weed control in winter oilseed rape, advises Dow AgroSciences.

“The recent rain, and the cold weather which has lowered soil temperatures, means that growers should apply Kerb Flo now for effective control of grass weeds in oilseed rape,” says Dow AgroSciences’ Broad-leaved crop specialist Rene Pollak.

The grass weed control provided by Kerb Flo in oilseed rape is an essential part of managing resistant black-grass across the whole rotation.  Where resistant black-grass is concerned correct timing, full dose rate and cool conditions are essential for long-lasting control.

“The ADAS warning about extended black-grass germination this winter is being confirmed in the field, and is a serious challenge in this year’s more open rape crops,” warns Rene Pollak. “Under current conditions, Kerb Flo will give the most robust and persistent control of grass weeds, killing emerged weeds and those that have still to germinate in early 2008.”

For resistant black-grass in oilseed rape an application of the full 2.1L/ha rate of Kerb Flo in 200L/ha of water should be made before 31 January. Using Laser (cycloxydim), in tank mix, improves black-grass control even where target site resistance grass weeds are present.
