Think before spreading manure and slurry, warns Dow AgroSciences

Farmers looking to dispose of farmyard manures and slurries over the winter months need to think about what may have gone into it, where it is going and whether any herbicide used last summer could affect crops next year.  

The warning comes after joint investigations by Dow AgroSciences and SAC identified instances of damage to potato crops in 2007 crops resulting from failure to observe label warnings regarding following crops on grassland herbicides.  

“Products containing aminopyralid have warnings that clearly state that damage can result if susceptible crops, such as potatoes, are planted on treated land. Similar restrictions apply when using manures and slurries that result from feeding hay or silage made using treated grass,” says Dow AgroSciences marketing specialist Colin Bowers.  

“As these issues can affect different fields, or even different farms, it is important that everyone involved – from product application to growing susceptible crops on land treated with either a grassland herbicide or manures – is aware of the need to check carefully.”
