How can I control Japanese Knotweed (Fallopia japonica)?

Japanese knotweed is notoriously difficult to control with most products on the market. However, one treatment that gives excellent control of the weed is Tordon* 22K. How can I control Slender Speedwell (Veronica filiformis) in turf?

Slender Speedwell is a difficult weed to control. There are no on-label recommendations at present. When controlling other on-label broad-leaved weeds in turf some users have reported PRAXYS* or CABADEX* can have some activity on Slender Speedwell when the weed is actively growing. Why can I not use agricultural products; they have the same active ingredients?

It is true that agricultural products and non-crop products often share the same active ingredients. However, the products sold in to non-crop areas very often have totally different formulations, designed to be safe to turf for example. Additionally, specific trials are done in non-crop areas to make sure the products are effective and safe in the area of use in which they are applied. Finally, it is illegal to apply a product that is not approved for a particular area of use.

Is there any way Buddleia can be controlled?

There are no label recommendations with any Dow AgroSciences products. Users have informed us that Timbrel* applied at 6.0–8.0 litres per hectare can give good results. Further treatments may be necessary on larger weeds.

Does Tordon* 22K reduce biodiversity because it is a residual product?

It is true that Tordon 22K is a residual broad-spectrum herbicide that can control a wide range of broad-leaved weeds. However, Tordon 22K is safe to grasses, which are an important habitat for many species of insects and birds. Additionally, trials on areas populated exclusively by Japanese knotweed have shown that in the year after application, when the Japanese knotweed has been killed, native species such as foxglove and bluebell recolonise the treated area. In this way the biodiversity of the treated area is improved, not reduced.
