Production Ornamentals

chrysanthemum production

The quantity of quality ornamentals and cut flowers being produced in the UK is greater than ever before. Plants produced must be without weeds or insect pests, or any signs of damage. Due to the intensive nature of production under glass, pest populations can multiply rapidly, quickly affecting many plants and ultimately reducing their saleability.

Weed Management
Effective weed control is essential for the production of high quality hardy nursery stock. Weeds compete for water, nutrients and light, harbour pests and diseases, and reduce the marketability of plants. Hand weeding at the point of sale is an expensive operation.

Flexidor* 125, can be used to control broad-leaved weeds in production ornamentals.

Insect Management

Effective control of Western Flower thrips - Frankliniella occidentalis - is important to produce attractive, blemish-free ornamental plants and cut flowers. Conserve* is also approved for the control of thrips in cucumber production.

The control of Western Flower thrips in protected ornamentals, and cucumbers, can be achieved using Conserve. Conserve has a novel mode of action and has shown no cross-resistance with existing chemistry. Applications of Conserve are effective at controlling all stages of the life cycle of thrips. Conserve can be used in association with predatory beneficial insects and mites when adopting Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs. Conserve has been shown to be very safe to ornamental plants, and cucumbers, and there are no operator re-entry restrictions when an application has been made. Best practice is always to allow spray deposits to dry on the plants before first re-entry.
