INTREPID® 2F Insecticide Receives Supplemental Labeling for Cranberries in WisconsinINTREPID teams with DELEGATE™ to offer excellent resistance management tools Indianapolis, IN - June 10, 2009 INTREPID® 2F insecticide recently received supplemental labeling for the suppression of Lepidoptera larvae in cranberries in Wisconsin. New language has been added to the label that offers growers who previously could not use INTREPID the opportunity to utilize the insecticide in Wisconsin. "Based upon what we've seen in studies, INTREPID 2F should be a good tool for us," Dr. Dan Mahr, professor of entomology at the University of Wisconsin, says. "INTREPID 2F could be used against multiple cranberry insects in Wisconsin." INTREPID 2F suppresses numerous Lepidoptera, including blackheaded fireworm, Sparganothis fruitworm, spotted fireworm, spanworms and gypsy moth. "Most of the cranberry pests in Wisconsin are Lepidoptera so that's why we're excited about INTREPID 2F," Mahr says. "First- and second-generation blackheaded fireworm, cranberry fruitworm and Sparganothis fruitworm are three of the most serious cranberry pests statewide." Dr. Cesar Rodriguez-Saona, a specialist in cranberry entomology at Rutgers University, has worked in the cranberry market since 2005. He says INTREPID® 2F insecticide provides good control of fruitworms and fireworms, especially cranberry fruitworm. "Cranberry fruitworm is a very difficult insect to control because you have a very small window when you can spray to protect the berries from being infested," Rodriguez-Saona says. "Usually the infestation of young berries happens while some plants are still in bloom. That's why it's important to have a product like INTREPID 2F that you can use during bloom that is soft on beneficials and is very effective against cranberry fruitworm." INTREPID 2F does not disrupt populations of beneficial insects, mites and pollinators, making it an ideal product for an Integrated Pest Management program. "We are interested in conserving natural enemies of pests and INTREPID 2F has a good track record in that regard," Mahr says. "The softer chemistry of INTREPID 2F is going to enhance our biological controls in cranberries. We think it will fit very nicely into an IPM program." DELEGATE™ WG insecticide, a Group 5 insecticide, combines with INTREPID® 2F insecticide, a Group 18 insecticide, to provide two excellent options in an insecticide resistance rotation. DELEGATE provides control of various cranberry insects while INTREPID 2F acts as an insect growth regulator against similar pests. Rotating the distinct chemistries of both products limits the effectiveness of harmful insects and makes it difficult for these pests to develop resistance to either insecticide. "Cranberry pests in Wisconsin belong to families of insects that have been known to develop resistance to certain insecticides," Mahr says. "It's important to rotate chemistries to prevent the onset of resistance. DELEGATE should fit nicely into a rotation with INTREPID 2F." "Wisconsin cranberry growers are going to benefit substantially from INTREPID 2F," Rodriguez-Saona says. "INTREPID 2F provides them with a new tool that's a good fit in a rotation and controls numerous problematic pests."
