Apple Growers Prepared to Put Guthion Insecticide Behind Them

• Extensive research in preparation for phase out of Guthion
• Increased emphasis on resistance management
• DELEGATE® WG insecticide among popular alternatives

Indianapolis - July 26, 2012

Apple growers throughout the country have been seeking alternatives for Guthion insecticide since its phaseout began five years ago. With the ban of Guthion starting Sept. 30, growers will have to move on to the next chapter of insect control.

Growers relied on Guthion for many years because of the efficacy against a broad spectrum of insects. But insects like codling moth and Oriental fruit moth developed resistance to azinphos-methyl, the active ingredient in Guthion, forcing growers to explore other options.

“Knowing that Guthion will be eliminated, we have spent the last five to seven years working on control alternatives,” says Dr. Greg Krawczyk, research associate professor and Extension tree fruit entomologist at Pennsylvania State University. “Growers are ready to deal with it.”

The creation of new chemistries with unique modes of action has helped ease the transition. One of the leading options has been DELEGATE® WG insecticide.

“DELEGATE has been one of the more popular alternatives,” says Dr. John Wise, associate professor of entomology at Michigan State University. “DELEGATE is very strong against the driver pests — insects like codling moth, Oriental fruit moth and obliquebanded leafroller.”

An attribute that distinguishes DELEGATE from other available insecticides is the ability to manage both codling moth and plum curculio. Plum curculio populations wane after petal fall as first-generation codling moth begin to appear. Applying DELEGATE® WG insecticide at first cover allows growers to effectively control codling moth and any remaining plum curculio in one shot.

“DELEGATE has an excellent rating for codling moth control,” Wise ways. “It also has shown activity against plum curculio through ingestion.”

Managing Insecticide Resistance
One of the key lessons learned from using Guthion is the importance of resistance management. Overuse reduced the efficacy of the product, so apple growers now place a greater emphasis on managing insecticide resistance.

“With more active ingredients now registered, there are more options that allow growers to follow good resistance management principles,” says Dr. Jay Brunner, entomologist at Washington State University. “Growers are encouraged to rotate active ingredients to conserve products as long as possible.”

“Growers now have spinosyns, which includes DELEGATE, diamides, neonicotinoids, pyrethroids, organophosphates and insect growth regulators,” Krawczyk says. “Growers have learned to rotate these products due to past issues with Guthion.”

Wise echoes Krawczyk’s belief that apple growers have learned from the past and are making efforts to ensure history doesn’t repeat itself.

“Apple and cherry growers in Michigan are currently financing baseline research on the susceptibility of obliquebanded leafrollers to registered compounds and to help guide product recommendations in managing against future resistance development,” Wise says.

DELEGATE, categorized by the Insecticide Resistance Action Committee as a Group 5 insecticide, provides apple growers with an excellent rotational partner in an effective resistance management program.

“There are multiple products within the diamide, organophosphate and neonicotinoid classes of chemistry,” Wise says. “What’s unique about DELEGATE is that it’s the only compound in its class of chemistry with an excellent rating on codling moth.”

DELEGATE® WG insecticide also offers broad-spectrum control similar to Guthion, displaying efficacy against Oriental fruit moth, obliquebanded leafroller, spotted tentiform leafminer, tufted apple budmoth, Western flower thrips and apple maggot.
