Most foundation treatments for herbicide-tolerant corn today consist of reduced rates of soil-applied herbicides that were designed for conventional corn. If you cut rates too much, grasses or broadleaf weeds break through and are left uncontrolled. That hurts your corn's yield potential in the same way weeds do when they don't get a soil-applied treatment – except that you're out the cost of the herbicide and the application. If you don't cut rates as much, you may end up using more product than necessary.
