Powerful Control with Minimal Impact
Vegetation managers are always on the lookout for tools that can save time, money and improve results. And although several herbicides can effectively control undesirable weeds or brush, a select few, like Opensight® specialty herbicide, offer the additional benefit of seedhead and height suppression in common grasses such as tall fescue or bahiagrass. This can inhibit growth, and therefore cut the number of times crews need to be out mowing — significantly reducing the overall maintenance costs of management programs where these grasses are present.
Powerful Weed and Brush Control
Opensight provides vegetation managers with a convenient solution for selective control of more than 150 key weed and brush species, including noxious and invasive species like thistles, wild carrot, Scotch broom, marestail and knapweeds. It’s also an excellent tank-mix partner for brush control programs, providing control of many species like buckbrush, blackberry, Western snowberry, black locust and honeylocust, wisteria and tree-of-heaven. Opensight is a cost-effective, easy-dissolving, dry-granule formulation, combining a unique and convenient premix of aminopyralid and metsulfuron methyl.
A recent field study conducted by Dow AgroSciences shows how effective Opensight is on some common noxious weeds and brush species.
- Opensight applied during the bolting stage at 2 ounces per acre to musk thistle showed 99 percent control at 180 days after treatment.
- Opensight® specialty herbicide applied at 3 ounces per acre provided 97 and 99 percent control of Canada thistle and houndstongue, respectively, one year after treatment. These applications were made at 3 ounces per acre in late May, while Canada thistle was at the rosette stage and houndstongue was bolting.
- Opensight at 3 ounces per acre, combined with 1 pound of 2,4-D ester, provided at least 98 percent control of buckbrush and Western snowberry at one year after treatment. These applications and observations were duplicated at four different times to ensure effective timing — June 1, June 12, June 27 and July 14.
Seedhead and Height Suppression on Desirable Grasses
In addition to controlling weeds and brush along roadsides, vegetation managers also manage grass height because tall, overgrown vegetation can limit motorist visibility of roadside hazards or signage.
Opensight, as a selective herbicide, has been used as a plant growth regulator (PGR) to suppress growth of certain cool- and warm-season grasses like tall fescue and bahiagrass on roadside rights-of-way. In many cases, this suppression may delay early season mowing of selected warm- and cool-season grasses by as much as 6 to 10 weeks, and enable an overall reduction in the frequency of mowing needed during the season.
In recent field trials, Dow AgroSciences measured the ability of Opensight to suppress seedhead and grass height after treatment. The results showed Opensight was especially effective in seedhead suppression, while exhibiting no injury to warm-season grasses, and only acceptable, temporary injury to the fescue as a result of treatment.
