The combination of mechanical treatments with simultaneous herbicide applications provides the long-lasting effects of herbicide treatments, with no vegetation brownout. It also saves time and money, while promoting environmentally friendly practices.

With combination mowing systems, the herbicide spray solution is either sprayed onto cut vegetation immediately after it’s cut by a mower, or wiped onto the cut surface as the blade comes in contact with the cut surfaces of the vegetation. In both cases, the herbicide can be absorbed and translocated into the root system of the vegetation with minimum potential for spray drift.

Tiger™ Corporation and Diamond Mowers™ Inc. are two companies that manufacture combination mowing systems.

Tiger WetCut™ Keeps Control of Brush

The Tiger Corporation offers a combination mowing system with its WetCut system. It’s designed for roadside areas where brush control is an issue. The WetCut system delivers herbicide, such as Garlon® 3A specialty herbicide, in the proper dosage, employing a cut-stump application.

“The WetCut system instantaneously sprays cut vegetation after the mower cuts it, so the herbicide application won’t interfere with the cutting,” says Les Slunecka, marketing manager for Tiger Corporation. “Our configuration also allows for spot spraying if needed.” Tiger WetCut works with either rotary or flail mowing systems, and also can be retrofitted to many other manufacturers’ mowing decks.

“A couple years back, we worked with Sam Quattrocchi, a senior sales representative from Dow AgroSciences, to improve our herbicide application system,” says Slunecka. “The biggest being a move from safety chains to poly-bristle shields behind our mowing decks. This improved shielding against drift, as well as provided a secondary method for getting the herbicide on to the cut stems.”

A Diamond in the Rough

Diamond Mowers Inc. introduced its WetBlade system to the market several years ago and recently has released its new ecoblade system. “We’ve recently changed our delivery system making the flow to the cutting blade smoother, and to allow for an easy change from standard rotary head blades to the ecoblade system,” says Bill Doyle, president of Diamond Mowers Inc. “In addition, our Flo-Thru Cell technology reduces operator exposure and risks for spillage.”

Reusable Flo-Thru Cells are delivered premixed and ready to use through a Flo-Thru Cell supplier, who will then handle both delivery and disposal. Returnable and refillable containers lead to less landfill waste, reducing liability for improper container disposal, spills and environmental contamination.
