Western Cotton Belt Refuge Options

Unless otherwise allowed by special local use needs (e.g., pink bollworm eradication in Arizona; please consult your local Extension service agent), you must plant a structured refuge consisting of non-Bt cotton to accompany your WideStrike® Insect Protection Bt cotton acreage if you farm in the following Western region: Arizona, California, New Mexico and the following Texas counties: Brewster, Crane, Crockett, Culberson, El Paso, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis, Loving, Pecos, Presidio, Reeves, Terrell, Val Verde, Ward and Winkler.

In this Western region, you must keep accurate records of where you plant all your Bt and non-Bt cotton (including the location and acreage of each type and variety of all Bt and non-Bt cotton you plant) so your Bt crops can be readily identified and your refuge areas verified. These records must be made available to Dow AgroSciences upon request.

Current Insect Resistance Management refuge options for WideStrike cotton include:

  • Embedded refuge
  • 5 percent unsprayed refuge
  • 20 percent sprayed refuge

Non-Bt cotton varieties planted in a refuge should have similar agronomic qualities to that of the associated WideStrike variety. In addition, the refuge must be managed in the same fashion as the associated WideStrike cotton varieties, including planting time, irrigation, fertilizer, crop termination and management of other pests such as plant bugs.

For complete details, see the WideStrike Product Use Guide, Fourth Edition. The Product Use Guide also outlines restrictions on where seed containing WideStrike can be planted.
